When SEO is not worth it, and where the money goes instead

SEO is not worth it when your buyers do not search for what you sell, when you could not take on more work, or when the page a search would land on cannot turn a visitor into an enquiry. In any of those cases, the EUR 450-750 for a one-off SEO foundation and the EUR 500-800/mo for SEO growth will do more spent somewhere else, and sometimes the right amount to spend is nothing.

We sell both, so this page argues against our own invoice. SEO bought at the wrong moment produces reports and no customers, and we would rather say so before you pay than after.

What you would be skipping

These are separate decisions. The SEO foundation is one-off: Search Console, analytics, indexation, technical hygiene, titles, internal links and a 3-6 month plan. SEO growth is monthly: technical and on-page work, service and location pages, internal links and reporting. Question SEO growth hardest, because it bills every month.

Where SEO is the wrong spend

Nobody searches for what you sell yet

If you have made something new, people cannot search for a name they have never heard, and SEO only works on demand that already exists. Type the problem you solve into Google the way a customer would say it. If the results are about something else, spend on reaching buyers directly: outreach, partnerships, showing up where they already talk.

You are already full

A personal trainer with a waiting list, a joiner booked out for the season, a consultancy with as much work as it can staff: more search traffic for any of them means more enquiries to turn away. Keep the site accurate and leave SEO until you have room.

The site cannot turn a visit into an enquiry

SEO sends people to a page. If that page does not say what you do, where, and how to get in touch, extra visitors leave the same way the current ones do. Fix the page first. That is design and engineering work, not SEO: a landing page is step 01 at EUR 600-900 over 1-2 weeks, and a business website with service pages and a contact or booking flow is step 03 at EUR 1.500-3.500 over 3-6 weeks.

You need enquiries this month

SEO has no on switch. Nothing done this month guarantees an extra click next month, and anyone who promises otherwise is guessing. Paid search shows ads once a campaign is approved and running, and stops when the budget stops. That is a clearer deal than any SEO forecast.

A rebuild or a new name is coming

Optimising pages you are about to replace means paying for the same work again. If a new site, domain or name is planned, do the foundation inside that build, including redirects from every old address that still gets visits or links.

Your customers find you on the map, not the page

For searches with local intent, Google can show a map of business listings above the ordinary results. For a barber, a bakery or a dentist, a complete Google Business Profile with current opening hours and genuine reviews comes first. It is free and you can set it up yourself; then watch whether calls and direction requests come in before paying for anything else.

Nobody on your side can give it time

SEO growth produces service and location pages, and those need facts only you have: what the service includes, where you work, what customers ask before buying. If nobody can answer those each month, you pay for pages built on guesses. This is the part that waits on you, so be honest about whether you can give it.

Every step and its price is on the full price list, and a fixed quote always follows scoping.

When SEO is worth it

The reverse case is just as plain. People search for your service with a place name or a specific problem, you have room for more work, your site answers those searches, and the business does not depend on results by a certain date. Then start with the foundation and read its 3-6 month plan before agreeing to anything monthly. If it shows real work for each month, SEO growth at EUR 500-800/mo makes sense; if not, stop at the foundation.

Process and timeline if you are unsure

  1. Tell us who buys from you and how they have found you so far.
  2. Check demand before spending: look at what your existing site already appears for in Search Console, or search the way your customers would.
  3. If the site is the problem, fix the site first on its step timeline: 1-2 weeks at step 01, 2-3 weeks at step 02, 3-6 weeks at step 03.
  4. If the demand is there, run the SEO foundation, one-off at EUR 450-750, ending with a 3-6 month plan.
  5. Add SEO growth at EUR 500-800/mo only if the plan justifies it, and review it against that plan, not out of habit.

When to spend less

This whole page is about spending less, so here is the smallest version that still does something. Verify Search Console yourself; it is free. Complete your Google Business Profile if you serve a local area. Write one clear page per service in your own words. Ask every new customer how they found you and keep a tally. If search shows up in it, you have a reason to pay for more. If not, you kept the money.

Questions buyers ask

Is SEO a waste of money for a small business?

Not by definition. It is a waste when one of the situations above applies, and good value when people search for what you do and your site answers them. The size of the business matters less than whether that search exists.

Can I pay for the foundation and skip the monthly work?

Yes. The SEO foundation is a one-off EUR 450-750 and does not commit you to SEO growth. You get the setup, the technical fixes and a 3-6 month plan, and you can carry out that plan yourself.

Is paid search better than SEO?

They answer different needs. Paid search buys visibility while the budget runs. SEO builds pages that stay on your site after the work is paid for, but it cannot give you a date for results. If you need work now, start with ads; if you can wait and the demand exists, SEO is the better use of the money.

I already pay for SEO every month. How do I know whether to stop?

Ask for clicks and enquiries on your service pages, compared with the same season before the work started. If nobody can show you either, you are paying for a chart. Stopping ends the monthly work; the pages already built stay on your site, and with us you own the code, the repository and the database.

If you are not sure which side of this line your business is on, tell us what you sell and who buys it, and we will tell you if the answer is not SEO.
