Page speed and SEO: what a faster site really changes
A faster site will not lift a page Google does not consider relevant, but a slow page on a phone costs you enquiries from the people who did find it. Finding what slows a site down is part of the technical hygiene in an SEO foundation at EUR 450-750 one-off; when the platform itself is the cause, the answer is a rebuild, and a business website at step 03 is EUR 1.500-3.500.
What Google actually measures
Google folds speed into what it calls page experience, measured through three Core Web Vitals:
- Largest Contentful Paint: how long until the biggest thing on screen, such as the hero image or the headline, has appeared.
- Interaction to Next Paint: how quickly the page responds to a tap, a menu or typing in a form.
- Cumulative Layout Shift: how much the layout jumps around while the page loads.
The signal comes from field data: measurements from real visitors on Chrome, not the test you run yourself. A site with few visitors may not have enough of that data to be judged, and then the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console stays empty. The score out of 100 in PageSpeed Insights is a lab test that tells a developer where to look. It is not what Google ranks.
What speed changes for rankings
Google says it shows the more relevant result even when that page's experience is poor. Page experience works closer to a tie-breaker between pages that are otherwise comparable. For a local service business up against a handful of similar sites, that tie can be real. It will not rescue a site with no service pages, vague titles and no links from anywhere else, so check those before you pay for speed work.
What speed changes for enquiries
This is where the money is. A visitor who clicked through from a search has already picked you over the other results, and everything after the click is on you:
- A hero image that has not loaded leaves a blank band with nothing saying they are in the right place.
- A quote button that ignores the first tap reads as broken, and the back button is right there.
- A cookie banner or a late image that pushes the page down as they reach for the phone number sends the tap to the wrong place.
- A contact form waiting on a heavy script puts the slowest part of the site exactly where the enquiry happens.
Before deciding anything, load your site on your own phone, on mobile data rather than office wifi, and watch what a stranger sees.
What slows a small business site down
| Cause | What the visitor notices | Metric it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Images uploaded straight from a camera or stock library | A blank space where the main image belongs | Largest Contentful Paint | Resize, use modern formats, load lower images on scroll |
| A theme or builder loading code for features the page does not use | Everything arrives late | Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint | Remove unused plugins, or rebuild if the builder is the weight |
| Chat widgets, review badges, trackers, embedded video | Taps that do nothing for a moment | Interaction to Next Paint | Remove what nobody uses, delay the rest |
| Images and banners with no space reserved for them | Text jumping while they read | Cumulative Layout Shift | Set dimensions, reserve room for banners |
| A slow server with no caching | A pause before anything appears | Largest Contentful Paint | Caching, a CDN, better hosting |
Images, scripts and reserved space can be put right on the site you have. A builder that loads its whole toolkit on every page, or a slow server, can mean the platform is the problem, and no amount of image compression fixes that.
What it costs to fix
| Situation | What fits | Price | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Causes found and technical hygiene put right | SEO foundation | EUR 450-750 one-off | Set at scoping |
| A single landing page on a slow builder | Step 01 rebuild | EUR 600-900 | 1-2 weeks |
| A site of 2-3 pages with a contact flow | Step 02 rebuild | EUR 900-1.500 | 2-3 weeks |
| A business site of 4-7 pages with CMS, service pages and booking or contact | Step 03 rebuild | EUR 1.500-3.500 | 3-6 weeks |
| Updates, monitoring, backups and small fixes after launch | Care | EUR 100-300/mo | Monthly |
Care does not cover a redesign or new features. A fixed quote always follows scoping, and every step is listed on the packages page.
On a rebuild, how the site is built decides speed more than the framework name: pages prepared ahead of time, images sized for the screen, third-party scripts kept out of the way. That is the approach behind our Next.js development, and it is why our design engineering plans design and build together, since a design that opens with a full-screen video has already made a speed decision. You own the code, the repository and the database. The studio can host the site, agreed per project.
How the work runs
- Measure what real visitors get in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights, phones and desktops apart. Without enough real data, the lab test and your own phone stand in.
- Find the cause on the pages that matter: the home page, the main service pages and the contact page, because that is where enquiries start.
- Fix or rebuild. Fixes to images, scripts and settings on the current site get a fixed quote after scoping. If the platform is the cause, you get a rebuild quote at the step that matches: 1-2 weeks at step 01, 2-3 weeks at step 02, 3-6 weeks at step 03.
- Check again once new visits are in. Field data is gathered over time, so a report read straight after a fix still describes the old site.
When to spend less
- Your field data already says good. If Search Console marks your pages as good on phones, a higher lab score will not bring more enquiries. Do not pay anyone, us included, to chase 100.
- One thing is obviously heavy. A background video, an autoplaying slider or a chat widget nobody answers can be switched off in the builder settings, by you.
- Nobody finds the site yet. If the report is empty because visits are low, visibility is the problem, not speed. Start with indexation, titles and a page for each service people search for.
- Enquiries come from referrals, not search. If people arrive already knowing your name, a reasonably quick site is enough.
Questions buyers ask
Will a faster site move me up in Google?
Only if your pages already compete on relevance. Speed is part of page experience, which Google weighs after how well a page answers the search. A fast page with the wrong title and no content about the service still will not rank for that service.
PageSpeed Insights gives my site a poor mobile score and a good desktop one. Should I worry?
Take the mobile result seriously. The mobile test simulates a slower device and connection, and Google indexes the mobile version of your site. Then check whether real-visitor data exists for your pages, because that is what counts, while the lab score only points at the causes.
Can my WordPress or Wix site be made fast without a rebuild?
It depends where the weight comes from. Images, unused plugins and third-party scripts can be dealt with on the site you have. If the theme or builder loads everything on every page, the platform sets the ceiling, and the honest answer is a rebuild quote rather than a monthly speed service.
Does hosting make a difference?
Hosting decides how quickly the server starts sending the page, and every other metric waits on that. Cheap shared hosting with no caching can hold back a site that is otherwise well built. The studio can host a site it builds, agreed per project, and the code, repository and database are yours.
