Offshore vs local agency: the honest comparison
An offshore team can build a good website, and for a simple brief their quote can land under ours. A single-page landing site here is EUR 600 to 900 and a business website of four to seven pages is EUR 1.500 to 3.500, so if your brief is already finished and your budget sits below those numbers, looking offshore first is a sensible move rather than a mistake.
The real comparison is not quality against price. It is about who is holding the parts of the brief that are not written down yet.
The honest case for going offshore
Distance is not a quality problem. There are excellent engineers in every country, and a brief that is genuinely written down travels perfectly well over email. Offshore tends to work when these five things are true of your project, not of projects in general.
- The design already exists. A Figma file, a template you bought, or a site you want rebuilt page for page. Nobody has to invent the layout.
- You can write the copy. Text is the part that cannot be done for you from a distance, because it comes out of your business rather than out of a brief.
- The scope is closed. Five named pages, one form to one inbox, and no open questions hiding behind the word "etc".
- Someone on your side can review. You do not need to be technical, but someone has to say clearly and quickly what is wrong.
- You are testing an idea. If the site is a probe and you would rather spend a little now than the right amount later, spend a little now.
If four or five of those describe you, a good offshore team will do the job and the money you keep is real money.
What the price gap is made of
Part of the gap is the cost of running a business in Amsterdam instead of somewhere cheaper, and that part buys you nothing. The rest is work that either gets done or gets pushed back onto you.
- Scoping. Turning "we need a new site" into a page list, a form that goes somewhere real, and a written definition of finished. A fixed quote always follows scoping, here or anywhere you should trust.
- Decisions. No brief survives contact with the build. Someone decides what the empty state says and what happens on a phone. If that is not the studio, it is you, in the evening, in a chat thread.
- Handover. The code, the repository and the database should end up yours. Ours do. Ask for that in writing before the build starts, whoever you hire.
- The part after launch. When a form stops sending, someone has to pick it up. Care is EUR 100 to 300 a month for updates, monitoring, backups and small fixes. It is not a redesign and not new features.
Side by side
| What you are comparing | Offshore team | Studio in Amsterdam |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of a small site | Can be lower than our step 01 range | EUR 600 to 900 at step 01 |
| Who decides when the brief runs out | You, in writing, in your own time | Us, then we tell you what we decided |
| How meetings run | Written, across a working day that barely overlaps yours | In person in Amsterdam, or a call inside the same working day |
| Code, repository and database | Ask, and get the answer in writing | Yours |
| Hosting | Ask who holds the account and the domain | We can host, agreed per project |
| Login, dashboard, CRM or payments | Possible, and worth scoping twice | Step 04, EUR 3.500 to 7.500 |
| Best fit | A closed brief you are able to review | A brief still partly in your head |
Where distance starts to cost you
If an offshore build goes wrong, the risk sits less in the code than in the loop: a question is asked, the answer arrives the next morning, the wrong thing is already built. These projects feel it most.
- The brief is still in your head. If you cannot write the site down, you cannot send it anywhere. The writing down is the service.
- The site has to carry the brand. If the design is the reason someone trusts you, it needs a person who will argue with you about it, not someone executing a wireframe.
- You need one accountable name. A shared channel with five handles in it is not accountability. When something breaks on a Friday, you want to know who reads the message.
- It is a step 04 build. Login, dashboard, API, CRM, payments or a chatbot, EUR 3.500 to 7.500 over 6 to 12 weeks. At that size an unclear decision gets rebuilt rather than corrected.
- You sell to a local market. SEO foundation is a one-off of EUR 450 to 750 covering Search Console, analytics, indexation, technical hygiene, titles, internal links and a 3 to 6 month plan. It needs someone who understands the market you sell into, not only the tooling.
How a project runs here, and how long
- Scoping. We take the brief apart until there is a page list, a purpose for each page, and a written list of what is out of scope.
- Fixed quote. Step 01 is EUR 600 to 900 for one page with a form and analytics. Step 02 is EUR 900 to 1.500 for two or three pages with a contact flow and basic CMS. Step 03 is EUR 1.500 to 3.500 for four to seven pages with a CMS and service pages. Step 04 is EUR 3.500 to 7.500, and step 05 starts from EUR 7.500 after discovery. Full ranges on packages.
- Build. 1 to 2 weeks at step 01, 2 to 3 weeks at step 02, 3 to 6 weeks at step 03, 6 to 12 weeks at step 04. How we work is on design and engineering.
- Review. This is the part that waits on you. Every timeline above assumes feedback comes back in one piece rather than in fragments.
- Launch and handover. The code, the repository and the database are yours. Launch defects get 14 days of support, then Care from EUR 100 a month if you want support within agreed hours.
When to spend less
- If what you need is one page, a form and analytics, buy step 01 at EUR 600 to 900. Do not let anyone, us included, walk you up to step 03 because the deck looked nicer.
- If you have no copy and no budget for copy, buy less site.
- If the site works and the complaint is that it looks dated, weigh a redesign against Care plus the SEO foundation one-off.
- If the money for the site is the money you need for stock, ads or a first hire, then do not hire us yet. Come back when the site is the bottleneck.
Questions we get asked
Is offshore work lower quality?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling proximity. What changes with distance is how much of the thinking you carry and how fast a wrong assumption gets corrected. A closed brief removes most of that risk. An open brief turns it into the whole project.
Can an offshore team build it and you maintain it?
Sometimes. We would read the code before agreeing, because Care at EUR 100 to 300 a month covers updates, monitoring, backups and small fixes, and we cannot promise those on something we cannot safely change. If the stack is one we would not support, we will say so rather than take the retainer.
Who owns the code, and can you host it?
With us the code, the repository and the database are yours, whether or not you work with us again. We can host, and we agree that per project rather than as a standing promise. Ask any offshore team both questions before you pay a deposit, and get the answers in writing.
Would you match an offshore quote?
No. We would have to remove the scoping and the decisions to get there, and that is the part you would be paying us for. If price is the deciding factor, the offshore quote is the honest answer and you should take it.
If you want a straight read on which side of this your project sits, send the brief you have, however rough, and we will tell you. Start here.
