Heat Shield Design: An Official Reference and Its Limits
A heat shield is a physical thermal-protection component. Its design depends on the actual environment, the protected structure and evidence from analysis and testing. An official example: Orion's heat shield
NASA's Orion crew-module reference describes an ablative heat shield whose Avcoat material is consumed during descent to carry heat away. The reference also describes the supporting structure, inspection of bonded blocks and thermal testing. These details concern that spacecraft; they are not a general recipe for another vehicle or application.
Read the test evidence with the design description
NASA's Orion testing reference describes testing across components and the assembled spacecraft. A material description alone does not establish that an assembly will work in its intended environment. Treat the test configuration, measurements, limitations and changes to the design as part of the evidence.
When evaluating a supplier's proposal, ask which operating conditions the analysis covers, who owns the specification, what was tested and which qualified person is responsible for review. A photograph or a generic material name does not answer those questions. This checklist does not establish suitability or approval.
