AI website builders vs a studio: who should use which
If your budget is under EUR 600, you are still testing whether anyone will buy, or you want a page without waiting on anyone, use an AI website builder: you pay with a platform plan and your own time, and that is a fair trade. A studio build starts at EUR 600-900 for a single-page landing at step 01, and it is worth that money only where the builder stops being enough.
We are a studio, so read this with that in mind. The case for the builder comes first, because for some readers it is the whole answer.
The honest case for an AI builder
- You see a result before you spend. A prompt gives you a draft to react to, which is easier than describing a site to someone else.
- The cost is a plan, not a project. For a business that has not earned anything yet, that difference matters.
- You change it yourself. Layout included, with nobody to wait on.
- It shows you what you want. Building a rough version tells you which pages you need and which you only thought you needed.
Who should use one
If one of these describes you, a builder is the better choice for now:
- You are testing an idea and do not yet know if anyone will pay for it.
- The site is for an event, a side project or anything with an end date.
- Your work comes through people who already know you, and the site only has to confirm you exist.
- Your budget is below our step 01 range of EUR 600-900.
- You enjoy doing it, you have the time, and your offer fits on a page or two.
Where builders stop
The limits are less about what the tools can generate and more about what happens after the draft.
The text describes a business like yours, not yours
A generated draft fills the page with plausible sentences. Your prices, your process, your area and the reasons to pick you still have to come from you, on a builder or with a studio. That part waits on you either way, and a site of generic copy can look finished while saying nothing.
The platform decides what can connect
Hosted platforms offer a lot inside their own walls, and some include bookings with payment and member logins. The limit arrives when the site has to work with a system you already run: a booking that reads availability from your own scheduling software, or enquiries that flow into your CRM, stock or accounting system through an API. If the platform does not offer that connection, you work around it. With a studio, that integration is step 04, EUR 3.500-7.500.
Moving later can mean starting again
Before you build, check what the platform lets you export. If the answer is your content but not the working site, leaving means rebuilding it somewhere else. On a studio build with us, the client owns the code, the repository and the database, and hosting is something we can provide, agreed per project. The wider trade-off is in no-code vs code.
Generated code still has to be run
Tools that generate an application from a prompt can give you code to take elsewhere, if they let you export it, and they hand you a new job: hosting, updates and the data. If the app stores customer accounts or payments, you are responsible for how that data is handled, whoever or whatever wrote the code. A prompt-built prototype is a good way to show an idea. Turning it into a product with auth, billing, an admin and deployment is step 05, from EUR 7.500, with the quote following discovery. What a SaaS MVP costs goes into that step.
Side by side
| What you need | AI builder | Studio step |
|---|---|---|
| A page that confirms you exist and takes enquiries | A good fit | Step 01, EUR 600-900, 1-2 weeks |
| Two or three pages you edit yourself | A good fit | Step 02, EUR 900-1.500, basic CMS, 2-3 weeks |
| 4-7 pages with service pages, booking or a contact flow | Works if the platform's own tools cover it | Step 03, EUR 1.500-3.500, 3-6 weeks |
| Payments, logins, a dashboard, a chatbot, or an API into your own systems | Limited to what the platform offers | Step 04, EUR 3.500-7.500, 6-12 weeks |
| A product of its own, with auth, billing, admin and deployment | A prototype to show the idea | Step 05, from EUR 7.500, after discovery |
Start on a builder, move with evidence
A builder site is not wasted money if you treat it as research. With analytics running, by the time you want more you can know which pages get visited, what people ask through the form, and which part of the offer they respond to. That becomes the brief for the next build, and a brief grounded in your own numbers is easier to scope.
Moving from a builder to a coded site means copying content across, keeping old addresses working with redirects, and repointing the domain. How to move an existing website walks through it.
How a studio build runs
- Scoping. What the site needs, which step it fits, and a fixed quote. For step 05, the quote follows discovery.
- Content. Text, photos and whatever you learned from a builder version. This is the part that waits on you.
- Design and build in code. Step 01 runs 1-2 weeks, step 02 2-3 weeks, step 03 3-6 weeks and step 04 6-12 weeks. We build with Next.js, as described on our Next.js page.
- Launch. Redirects in place, domain connected, forms and analytics checked.
When to spend less
The sections above already make the case for spending less, so briefly:
- You fit the list of who should use a builder. Use one. That buys nothing from us, so do not hire us yet.
- The builder site works but feels weak. The fix may be your text rather than a new site. Rewrite before you rebuild.
- You do need a studio build. Match the step to the need. A single page with a strong offer is step 01, not step 03, so buy that and do not buy a bigger build yet.
Questions about AI builders and studios
Can you take over a site I made with an AI builder?
We do not work inside builders. We rebuild the site in code with Next.js, using your content and what the first version taught you, and the price follows the step the new site fits.
Will Google penalise a site written with AI?
Google's spam policies target many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings without adding value, however they were made, and they name generative AI as one of those ways. A business site with text you have checked and made specific is not what that policy describes. Generic text is still a problem, just not a policy one: it gives nobody a reason to choose you.
Is a builder cheaper over time?
Compare the same period on both sides: plan fees, paid add-ons and your own hours, against a studio build plus hosting and, if you want it, Care at EUR 100-300 a month. Care covers updates, monitoring, backups and small fixes, not a redesign or new features. Which comes out cheaper depends on your site and what your time is worth.
What does a studio add if AI can write code?
Decisions and checking. What to leave out, how the data is shaped, what happens when a payment fails or a form gets abused, and testing all of it before launch. Producing code is the part the tools speed up; deciding which code to write and proving it works is what you pay a studio for.
